California Offers Free Historian Passport for State Historic Parks

The state says the temporary digital pass aims to deepen public engagement with local history through Juneteenth programming and America250 planning.

Overview

  • Governor Gavin Newsom announced the special free edition of the Historian Passport that launched on Juneteenth and is available for digital download through July 6.
  • The pass admits groups of up to four people to more than 30 state historic parks and is a normally $50 annual product offered at no cost for a limited time.
  • Users must create an account on ReserveCalifornia to obtain the digital pass and are encouraged to use the OuterSpatial app for a state photography contest tied to the program.
  • California says the passes are valid beginning on June 19 through the end of 2026, though at least one outlet reported a conflicting expiration of 'the end of this year.'
  • The program is backed by the California State Parks Foundation and the State Railroad Museum Foundation, connects to Nature for All and other free-pass programs, and follows more than $1 billion in state park investments to expand access and preserve difficult local histories.
