California Man, 26, Drowns in Colorado River After Jumping In for Hat

Police call the death accidental, prompting renewed safety reminders.

Overview

  • Kristopher Nathaniel Logan, 26, entered the Colorado River from a pontoon boat Monday around 11:15 a.m. to grab a blown-off hat and never resurfaced, Bullhead City police said.
  • Fire department divers recovered his body near Davis Camp, and police said he was not wearing a life jacket and that the death appears accidental with no sign of a crime.
  • Logan had been celebrating his birthday and may have cut power to the pontoon before the current carried him away, his father told AZ Central.
  • Local and state officials are stressing life jackets as the river’s cold water can trigger a gasp reflex within a minute and rob arm and leg control in roughly 10 minutes.
  • The case comes after two other Colorado River deaths in 2026, including a Feb. 19 drowning at Grand Canyon and an April 7 speedboat crash that killed two men near Lake Havasu.
