California Lethally Removes Four Wolves From Sierra Valley Pack After Months of Cattle Attacks

Local reporting says this marks the first state-directed killing of protected wolves in California.

Overview

  • CDFW carried out the operation in coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under endangered‑species rules, calling it a last resort.
  • From March 28 to Sept. 10, the Beyem Seyo pack was linked to 70 livestock losses—63% of statewide wolf-caused losses—plus 17 more confirmed or probable losses through Oct. 14.
  • CDFW’s Summer Strike Team logged more than 18,000 staff hours over 114 days, conducted 95 hazing events, and worked with 18 ranches using tools such as drones, fladry, diversionary feeding, and 24/7 field presence.
  • Those killed included the breeding pair (WHA08M and LAS23F) and two others (BEY01F and BEY12M); a juvenile was unintentionally killed after being mistaken for the breeding male.
  • Remains of two other juveniles were found dead earlier for unknown reasons, and officials are working to capture and relocate the remaining young wolves to wildlife facilities.
