California Awards $80 Million to Nonprofits for Security Upgrades

The funding is meant to harden vulnerable community sites after the May 18 mosque attack by paying for physical security improvements plus victim compensation.

Overview

  • The state announced Thursday that $80 million will go to 343 nonprofit grantees, 228 of which are faith-based, through the California State Nonprofit Security Grant Program.
  • Cal OES will administer the grants with $76 million for direct security work and $4 million for program administration and technical help.
  • Grants cover specific measures such as reinforced doors and gates, high-intensity lighting, alarm systems, surveillance, access controls and emergency-preparedness upgrades.
  • Victims, family members and witnesses from the May 18 Islamic Center of San Diego attack may apply to the California Victim Compensation Board for benefits of up to $70,000 to cover medical, mental-health, lost wages and funeral costs.
  • The awards build on a program that has invested more than $300 million since 2015 to protect 1,614 nonprofits and places of worship and the revised state budget proposes an additional $40 million for continued support.
