Calgary Sets Monthlong Shutdown of Key Water Main, Reinstates Restrictions Starting March 9

Officials will reinforce nine deteriorating pipe segments to keep service stable until a new parallel line comes online in December.

Overview

  • The Bearspaw South Feeder Main, which supplies about 60% of Calgary’s treated water, will be taken offline March 9–April 9 for targeted reinforcements along 16 Avenue NW near Sarcee Trail.
  • No outdoor water use will be allowed, with mandatory indoor conservation for Calgary and neighbouring Tsuut'ina Nation, Airdrie, Chestermere and Strathmore.
  • The daily consumption cap has been raised to roughly 500 million litres, with guidance for three‑minute showers, flushing only as needed and running appliances only with full loads.
  • Most supply will come from a single treatment plant during the outage, creating higher risks including limited firefighting capacity and possible boil‑water advisories if pressure drops.
  • Crews begin removing medians and setting detours this week, including keeping the westbound 16 Avenue NW exit to Sarcee Trail closed, as the city accelerates a parallel steel replacement pipe due in 2026.
