Calgary Sets March 9 Start for Feeder Main Reinforcements, Citywide Outdoor Water Ban to Follow

The shutdown enables crews to shore up up to nine deteriorating sections so the system can operate safely until a new parallel line is completed.

Overview

  • Construction is scheduled for roughly four weeks on segments along 16 Avenue N.W. near Sarcee Trail, including three locations in Point McKay Park.
  • The Bearspaw South Feeder Main will be taken out of service during the work, with no outdoor water use permitted and a request to save 25–30 litres per person daily indoors.
  • Calgarians are urged to keep showers to three minutes, flush only when necessary, and run dishwashers and laundry only with full loads.
  • Reinforcement will involve excavating the pipe, installing an exterior steel cage, pouring concrete, and backfilling, plus valve work near the Shaganappi Pump Station and inspections at the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant, with additional valve replacements at 33 Avenue and 89 Street.
  • The line supplies Calgary as well as Tsuut’ina Nation, Airdrie, Chestermere and Strathmore, and officials stress staying under the system’s reliable capacity of 485 million litres per day as crews prepare for rapid repairs if unexpected breaks occur.
