Calgary, Edmonton and Prague to Host 2028 World Cup of Hockey

League organizers set an eight-team, 17-game format with Edmonton hosting the semifinals and final.

Overview

  • The NHL and NHLPA made the announcement at the GM meetings, confirming the tournament will be played in February 2028 during an NHL season pause.
  • Calgary’s Scotia Place and Prague’s O2 Arena will each stage six round-robin games plus one elimination game, with all semifinals and the championship at Edmonton’s Rogers Place.
  • The event will be run by the NHL and NHLPA without IIHF involvement, and the final list of participating national teams has not yet been released.
  • Russian participation remains unresolved, with past NHL comments indicating no invitation if the IIHF ban is still in effect.
  • The selection caps a bid process that opened in June 2025 and feeds into a new international calendar under which the World Cup is planned every four years, alternating with the Olympics.
