Cabinet Clears India’s First Semi High-Speed Rail Linking Ahmedabad and Dholera

The plan ties Dholera’s airport and industrial zone into metro, bullet and freight networks under PM Gati Shakti.

Overview

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, which met Wednesday, approved a 134 km semi high-speed double line between Ahmedabad (Sarkhej) and Dholera in Gujarat.
  • Trains are designed for 220 km/h with planned operations at 200 km/h, and reports cite end-to-end travel times ranging from about 34 to 48 minutes.
  • Government projections say the line will connect roughly 284 villages with around five lakh people and cut fuel use and CO2 as more trips shift from road to rail.
  • Officials outlined integration with Ahmedabad Metro at Sabarmati, Gandhigram and Vastrapur, the proposed Sabarmati bullet station, and a freight corridor link near Sanand.
  • The government pegs the project at Rs 20,667 crore with completion targeted up to 2030–31, and Railways now moves into tenders, land work and detailed designs.
