Cab Driver Arrested After Kidnapping, Rape and Killing of Child in South Delhi

The case exposes safety gaps for street-dwelling children.

Overview

  • Police say a man driving a commercial cab is accused of abducting a 10–11-year-old girl who was sleeping with her family on a Mehrauli pavement in the early hours of Monday and later dumping her body near the FaridabadGurugram road.
  • Officers traced the vehicle through CCTV and technical data, arrested the suspect in west Delhi within hours, and say he led them to the site where the body was recovered after he confessed during questioning.
  • While being taken for a crime-scene reconstruction, the accused allegedly tried to snatch a policeman’s service pistol and flee, and police fired and wounded him in the leg; he was treated in hospital and remains in custody.
  • A formal FIR has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, forensic teams have collected samples from the car and scene, and investigators are preparing a chargesheet.
  • Authorities are examining the accused’s prior records and app-cab onboarding, and the case has drawn attention to the vulnerability of homeless and migrant families who sleep on pavements and the need for stronger driver verification.
