BYU Plays Solo NCAA Golf Round and Posts Team 1-Under 287

The NCAA scheduled BYU to play its third round alone for religious reasons and will post the Cougars’ score after other teams complete the same round on Sunday.

Overview

  • BYU played its designated third round alone at La Costa on Thursday and carded a team score of 1-under 287 under the tournament’s identical tee and pin setup.
  • Senior Simon Kwon led the round with a 2-under 70 while freshman Kihei Akina eagled the par-5 second hole and both Akina and Parker Bunn shot 1-under 71s.
  • The NCAA accommodated BYU’s policy of not playing on Sundays by scheduling the lone round, and officials will officially insert BYU’s score into the leaderboard after the other 29 teams play the same round on Sunday.
  • When stroke play resumed Friday for all teams, BYU posted an 8-over 296 in the official first round and will need stronger play over the remaining holes to contend for a top-15 cut after 54 holes.
  • The single-team scheduling has precedent in past NCAA championships, the Cougars’ roster is largely Utah-developed, and the next key milestone is making the 15-team cut that leads to the match-play phase for the top eight.
