BYD Scales 1.5MW Flash Chargers to Thousands and Pledges €2 Billion for Europe

The buildout is meant to rapidly expand ultra‑fast public charging across Europe to pressure incumbent networks.

Overview

  • BYD has deployed more than 5,700 Flash Charging stations in China and has opened initial sites in Germany and the United Kingdom as it pushes overseas expansion.
  • The Flash Charging system can deliver up to 1,500 kW and BYD says compatible cars with Blade Battery 2.0 and a 1000V architecture can charge from about 10% to 70% in roughly five minutes.
  • BYD has committed roughly €2 billion to build about 3,000 European stations by 2027 and estimates each site costs around €580,000 to construct.
  • European chargers will use CCS2 connectors, be open to non‑BYD cars, and BYD has signaled aggressive pricing targets that could undercut rivals, but grid connections, permitting, vehicle compatibility and utilization economics are unresolved risks.
  • Analysts say BYD’s pace and high‑power focus could challenge Tesla’s charging lead if sustained, yet Tesla’s years of route data, network reliability, software integration and NACS adoption remain significant competitive advantages.
