BYD Reclaims Global EV Crown Through Record Exports

Rapid export growth by BYD paired with local factory ramps is enabling Chinese brands to displace rivals in key markets.

Overview

  • BYD delivered about 557,090 battery-electric vehicles in Q2 2026, surpassing Tesla’s reported roughly 480,126 deliveries for the quarter and retaking the quarterly sales lead.
  • The reclaiming of the top spot was driven by record overseas shipments, with June exports hitting roughly 175,349 units and accounting for about 43% of BYD’s monthly sales.
  • Chinese marques outsold Japanese brands in Europe for the first time in May, according to ACEA data, helped by competitive pricing, strong PHEV growth that avoids EU BEV tariffs, and renewed national subsidies.
  • In Australia BYD set a company record in June with 18,881 deliveries, finishing just 243 units behind Toyota as electrified vehicles reached a record share of the market.
  • To protect margins and sidestep trade barriers, BYD is ramping its Hungarian plant toward mass production and is close to choosing a second European brownfield site, signaling a shift from export-only growth to onshore manufacturing.
