BYD Posts H1 Profit Drop as Exports Lift Q2 Performance

The company’s push into overseas markets is reshaping revenue mix as weaker China demand and rising input costs squeeze margins.

Overview

  • Shares fell nearly 5% in Hong Kong after Monday’s interim results showed first-half net profit attributable to shareholders fell about 20.5% to roughly 12.3 billion yuan and revenue dropped about 7.1% to 344.8 billion yuan.
  • Second-quarter profit offered a brighter signal with Q2 net profit up about 30% year on year to 8.2 billion yuan while Q2 revenue was 194.6 billion yuan.
  • Exports surged 67.8% to 792,000 vehicles in H1 and overseas revenue reached about 181.27 billion yuan, representing just over 52% of total first-half sales and overtaking domestic revenue for the first time.
  • BYD cited sluggish domestic demand, fierce local competition, and higher costs for commodities, raw materials and chips as the main drivers behind the H1 margin squeeze.
  • Analysts are watching whether international expansion can sustain profit growth with Citi projecting Q3 core earnings of about 13.5 billion yuan and a full-year net profit near 41.2 billion yuan, a forecast that frames investor expectations for the rest of 2026.
