BYD Leopard 8 Plug-In Hybrid SUV Design Patented in India

The move signals design protection in a key market without confirming local sales.

Overview

  • BYD secured Indian approval for a design patent for the full-size Leopard 8, a ladder-frame plug-in hybrid SUV.
  • Patent drawings and specs list 5,195 mm length, 1,994 mm width, 1,905 mm height and a 2,920 mm wheelbase, plus a boxy body with a tailgate spare.
  • The setup pairs a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine with a 36.8 kWh Blade battery and two motors, with BYD claiming about 748 PS, 760 Nm and 0–100 km/h in 4.8 seconds.
  • BYD also cites about 100 km electric range and roughly 1,200 km total range, and these figures come from test cycles that may differ from India’s ratings.
  • The patent points to three cabin screens and Huawei-backed driver aids with roof LiDAR, seating for 5, 6 or 7, and overseas badges that read Fangchengbao Bao 8 or Denza, while any India launch is still unconfirmed.
