BYD Gains Ground in Germany as Exports Rise and China Sales Slide

Rising exports, boosted by low-priced new models, help BYD offset a prolonged slump in China.

Overview

  • BYD logged 4,709 new registrations in Germany in April 2026, lifting the year-to-date total to 13,830 and taking April market share to about 1.89%.
  • KBA data for the first quarter of 2026 show 9,120 BYD registrations in Germany, a result comparable to Mini and ahead of Porsche.
  • Worldwide deliveries reached 321,123 vehicles in April 2026, which BYD reports was up 7% from March but down 15.5% from a year earlier.
  • Exports rose to a reported 134,542 vehicles in April 2026, up about 71% year over year, which helps counter an eighth consecutive year-on-year decline in China linked to subsidy cuts and fiercer local competition.
  • In China, the new Song Ultra reportedly sold about 61,240 units in its first month after a March 26 launch, with trade outlets citing BYD’s claims of long range and very fast charging.
