BYD Expands Shark 6 Lineup in Australia and Confirms Work on Full-Size Pickup

Local demand from fleets is steering BYD to tailor its ute range for Australia.

Overview

  • BYD’s Asia Pacific chief Liu Xueliang told media in Melbourne on Monday that a larger, full-size pickup is in development to sit above the midsize Shark 6.
  • The Shark 6 Dynamic cab‑chassis is now on sale in Australia at $55,900 before on‑road costs, developed specifically for local needs with re‑engineered charging hardware and an optional Ironman4x4 alloy tray.
  • BYD has announced a Shark 6 Performance plug‑in hybrid for May 2026 with a 2.0‑litre turbo engine and dual motors producing 469 hp and 700 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 5.5 seconds, and braked towing up to 3,500 kg.
  • The Performance tune trades efficiency for muscle, with electric‑only range cut to 80 km from 100 km and combined range to 640 km from 800 km, while keeping the same AWD layout.
  • BYD says it is exploring a battery‑electric ute and a full‑size model for Australia, with powertrains and timing unconfirmed, and analysts note a factory right‑hand‑drive truck could undercut rivals that rely on costly conversions often topping AU$150,000.
