BYD Confirms Larger Atto 3 Successor for New Zealand as Atto 5

The change signals a pivot to rear-wheel drive with Blade 2.0 flash-charging tech.

Overview

  • BYD has revealed the second-generation Yuan Plus at the Beijing motor show, confirming it will replace the Atto 3 in New Zealand with the Atto 5 badge from around 2027.
  • The new model grows to 4,665 mm long, 1,895 mm wide, and 1,675 mm tall on a 2,770 mm wheelbase, adding 210 mm in length and 60 mm in height over the current Atto 3.
  • It moves to a rear-wheel-drive layout with rear-mounted single motors rated at 200 kW or 240 kW, a clear step up from the outgoing model’s 150 kW front-drive setup.
  • BYD’s Blade 2.0 LFP batteries come in about 57.5 kWh and 68.6 kWh sizes, with claimed flash charging from 10% to 70% in five minutes and WLTP range up to 517 km.
  • Australia’s path is still unconfirmed, with the Atto 3 Evo already on sale in the UK and listed in Australian certification but no local showroom plans announced.
