BWI to Close Longest Runway This Summer for $83.8 Million Rehab

Funded by federal and state grants, the project will restore pavement and upgrade the runway’s electrical system to meet FAA safety standards.

Overview

  • Runway 10-28, BWI’s 10,500-foot main commercial runway, will be fully closed from Wednesday, July 22 through Oct. 8 for milling, repaving and electrical system work.
  • Daytime airline operations will shift to Runway 15R-33L while crews work and that runway will have scheduled overnight intersection closures between Aug. 4 and Oct. 7 to allow intersection paving.
  • The $83.8 million contract was approved by the Maryland Board of Public Works and is financed largely by an FAA Airport Infrastructure grant with additional Maryland Transportation Trust Fund support.
  • Officials say the airport will remain open and flight schedules were coordinated with the FAA and carriers but residents may notice altered flight paths and increased noise with a 24-hour complaint hotline available at 410-859-7021.
  • This is the first major rehab of Runway 10-28 since 2012 and the work aims to protect BWI’s capacity for roughly 300 daily nonstop departures that support the region’s travel and economy.
