Burger King Rolls Out First Whopper Refresh in a Decade With New Bun, Creamier Mayo and Box Packaging

Burger King says customer complaints about smashed sandwiches prompted the tweaks to improve quality.

Overview

  • The updated Whopper is now in more than 7,000 U.S. restaurants, featuring a premium bun, a creamier mayonnaise and clamshell box packaging.
  • The clamshell box is meant to prevent burgers from arriving smushed and, according to Burger King’s head chef, helps retain heat for a better melt on the cheese.
  • The beef patty remains the same quarter‑pound of flame‑grilled beef and the sandwich continues to be free of artificial colors, flavors and preservatives.
  • Burger King tested buns, mayo and packaging for seven months, working with nearly a dozen bakeries to redesign the bun with more lift and a glaze to better hold sesame seeds.
  • Corporate estimates the changes will cost franchisees about $4,000 per location annually and has urged operators not to raise prices, a stance analysts say could strain margins under current cost pressures.
