Bungie Launches Vault Breaker, Two-Week Experimental PvE Mode for Marathon

The timed trial will gather player feedback and telemetry to help design a fuller PvE experience for Season 3.

Overview

  • Vault Breaker launched Tuesday and runs through August 4 as a limited two-week PvE event on the Cryo Archive map that anyone can play solo, in duos, or in trios.
  • The mode plays as a roguelite where players raid vaults against AI UESC enemies, face escalating challenges and end-run bosses such as the Compiler.
  • Progress uses an event currency called Vault Data and Sponsored Kits that persist between runs to increase starting power while most loot from a run is converted into Vault Data on extraction.
  • Bungie has isolated Vault Breaker’s rewards from normal multiplayer by preventing direct transfer of run gear and offering an Armory where Vault Data can buy rotating items for use outside the mode.
  • Coverage notes that Marathon’s director Joe Ziegler recently left Bungie and layoffs affected some Marathon staff, facts that analysts say could shape player expectations and the studio’s ability to act on the trial’s results.
