Build-A-Bear Recalls 36,000 Heartwarming Hugs Bears for Choking Hazard

Regulators say a loose zipper slider poses a choking risk to children.

Overview

  • Build-A-Bear’s Heartwarming Hugs Bear, recalled Thursday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, involves about 36,000 units in the U.S. and about 520 in Canada.
  • The hazard stems from the zipper slider on a side pouch that can detach and become a small part that a child could choke on, with no injuries reported in North America and one detachment incident noted in the U.K.
  • The recalled model is 034464, identified on a label sewn into the back of a leg, and the weighted plush includes a 2.5‑pound ceramic bead “heart” that can be heated or cooled.
  • Customers should stop using the toy and return it to a Build-A-Bear store or request a free return label at buildabear.com/recalls to receive a refund to the original payment method or a gift card.
  • The bears were sold from January through March 2026 for about $48 and are rated for ages 3 and up with an adult-supervision warning due to the heating and cooling element.
