Buenos Aires Province Rejects National VTV Overhaul

Local leaders in Mar del Plata are exploring a municipal inspection system in response.

Overview

  • The Kicillof administration confirmed it will not adopt the national changes to vehicle inspections, keeping the current provincial regime that requires annual checks from two years of vehicle age.
  • National decrees 196/2025 and 139/2026 move the first check to five years, set biennial inspections for vehicles aged 5–10, keep annual reviews for older cars, allow qualified workshops and dealers to verify, and scrap the Model Configuration Report.
  • Minister Federico Sturzenegger promoted the reform as a way to simplify the process and cut costs, later posting a pointed 2027 voting remark after the provincial refusal.
  • In General Pueyrredon, La Libertad Avanza councilors filed a request urging the province to adhere, while UCR + Nuevos Aires leader Ariel Bordaisco proposed a municipal VTV citing precedents in Quilmes and Avellaneda.
  • Drivers in Mar del Plata and Batán must use the two existing plants at Saavedra 3200 and Ruta 88 km 9.5, with current fees in place and higher fines now applied for expired or missing VTV.
