Budget Wholemeal Loaves Outscore Many £3 Artisan Breads, Which? Finds

The watchdog used the UK Nutrient Profiling Model to weigh fibre, protein, salt, sugar.

Overview

  • The consumer group Which?, which published its analysis Wednesday, ranked 60 popular loaves using the UK system that gauges nutrition for food marketing rules.
  • Scores clustered from 70 to 80, with every loaf above the government healthy cutoff of 62, which means even the lowest scorers can fit a balanced diet.
  • Thirteen loaves hit 80, including Aldi’s 59p Village Bakery Medium Wholemeal, with several supermarket own‑brand wholemeals matching the top mark.
  • Biona Organic Original Rye scored 70 due to high salt at 1.13g per 100g and low protein at 4.2g per 100g despite a £3.10 price tag.
  • Many malted or granary loaves use refined flour colored to look wholegrain, as seen with Hovis Granary at 72 with 3.7g fibre and 1.03g salt per 100g, so Which? advises choosing loaves labeled “Wholemeal” and checking fibre and salt on pack.
