Buckingham Palace Says King Charles Will Not Issue Easter Message This Year

The decision sharpens scrutiny of the monarch’s role as head of the Church of England.

Overview

  • Buckingham Palace, which confirmed Thursday that no Easter message will be issued in 2026, follows a long pattern in which Easter addresses are not routine.
  • Bishop Ceirion H Dewar said he was “bitterly disappointed” by the move, and his open letter urging a public Easter message has drawn more than 8,400 signatures.
  • Earlier this year the Royal Family’s account posted a Ramadan greeting, Windsor hosted an Iftar, and the King said “Ramadan Mubarak” at a state banquet, steps that drew both praise and criticism.
  • The King and Queen marked Maundy Thursday with a visit to North Wales, and a state visit to the United States is scheduled for late April.
  • Easter messages are occasional rather than annual, with Queen Elizabeth II issuing one during the 2020 pandemic, and last year the King released a Maundy Thursday message that cited Jesus and referenced other faiths.
