Buckingham Fountain Turns On for 2026 Season at Switch on Summer Festival

The ceremony doubles as the launch of Chicago Park District summer programming.

Overview

  • The landmark fountain, switched on Saturday during the 12th annual Switch on Summer festival, begins its 2026 run in Grant Park.
  • Zach Gray of Logan Square flipped the switch after winning ComEd’s sweepstakes to serve as the event’s guest of honor.
  • The festival is a partnership between the Chicago Park District and ComEd that kicks off free Night Out in the Parks events across the city.
  • The Park District says major water shows run 20 minutes each hour starting at 9 a.m., with a 150‑foot center jet and lights‑and‑music at the start of each hour after dusk, with the last display at 10:35 p.m. and shutdown at 10:55 p.m.
  • Starting May 30, the Park District will add 100 movable metal chairs near the fountain to encourage visitors to stay and take in the views, with the fountain scheduled to run through mid‑October.
