BTS Shows Drove 3,377% Visitor Surge in Goyang, Government Says

The analysis points to concerts converting fans into longer trips with higher spending.

Overview

  • The Culture Ministry's analysis, released Wednesday, reported a 3,377% jump in foreign visitors and a 3,699% surge in card spending in Goyang during the April concerts versus first‑quarter baselines.
  • Surveyed fans at the March 21 Gwanghwamun comeback show stayed an average of 8.7 days and spent about 3.53 million won per person, above the first‑quarter averages of 6.1 days and 2.45 million won for inbound tourists.
  • Attendees of the three Goyang shows averaged 7.4 days in Korea and 2.91 million won in spending, and mobile and card data showed about 35‑fold more foreign visitors and 38‑fold higher spending near the stadium compared with a year earlier.
  • The study combined on‑site surveys with telecommunications location data and credit or debit card transactions to estimate visitor counts, trip length and per‑person outlays.
  • In response to the gains, the ministry set a June 1–15 welcome period and a two‑week campaign around BTS’s June 12–13 Busan concerts to drive regional travel, and HYBE ran a citywide BTS‑themed program in Seoul tied to the events.
