BSR Targets Easter for Berlin’s Grit Cleanup, Calls for Resident Help

The push follows an unusually harsh season that required about 4,000 tonnes of grit, nearly three times the norm.

Overview

  • BSR says most grit and leftover winter litter should be cleared by mid-April, with the goal of having the city cleaned by Easter.
  • No special sweeps are planned, as crews will work within regular cleaning routes and prioritize high-traffic inner-city streets with support from contractors, other departments and citizens.
  • Residents are urged to sweep grit into small piles, place up to 10 liters in a bag in the residual-waste bin, or take up to 30 liters free of charge to any of the 14 recycling yards.
  • The agency warns against sweeping grit into curb lines or gullies and asks people not to call for pickup times because crews cannot be everywhere at once.
  • Collected grit is cleaned and reused as construction material rather than for spreading, and adjacent property owners remain responsible for most sidewalks.
