Bryde’s Whale Skeleton Draws Crowds as CMFRI Marks 79th Foundation Day Open House

Hands-on exhibits connected research with conservation-focused learning.

Overview

  • The two-day program ran February 2–3 across CMFRI campuses, highlighting the National Marine Biodiversity Museum and a newly inaugurated Marine Megafauna Museum.
  • A 14-metre Bryde’s whale skeleton from a 2023 Kozhikode stranding anchored the displays at Kochi, complemented by recordings of marine mammal vocalizations.
  • Visitors toured aquariums, hatcheries, laboratories and libraries, with the Visakhapatnam centre alone reporting more than 1,100 attendees, largely school groups.
  • Students received career guidance in fisheries and allied sciences through an interactive workshop featuring CMFRI Director Dr. Grinson George and institute scientists.
  • Exhibits showcased rare species such as sunfish, oarfish, whale sharks and giant clams, while demonstrations emphasized sustainable fisheries, mariculture technologies and traditional fishing gear.
