Brunswick Creek Wildfire Grows to Over 1,200 Hectares and Forces Evacuations Near Boston Bar

Strong downslope winds have limited aerial firefighting, raising safety risks for crews.

An out-of-control wildfire near Boston Bar, B.C. has grown to approximately 100 hectares in size, forcing evacuations.

Overview

  • The blaze, first detected on July 2, surged to more than 1,200 hectares by Sunday and is listed as B.C.’s only wildfire of note.
  • Evacuation orders cover North Bend and Boothroyd Indian Band lands while about 260 properties in Boston Bar are under an evacuation alert.
  • B.C. Wildfire Service and partners have deployed multiple ground crews, heavy equipment and helicopters including night-vision aircraft and have requested an incident management team.
  • Steep canyon terrain, heavy smoke and strong downslope winds that gusted 40–50 km/h have produced spot fires and limited safe use of aircraft, complicating suppression.
  • Smoke has reduced air quality across the Fraser Canyon and been seen as far as Merritt, Highway 1 remains open but two local roads are closed, and a reception centre in Hope is open for evacuees.
