Overview
- Police say 30-year-old Shakeema Davis was stabbed at a barbecue she hosted in Lincoln Terrace Park in Crown Heights in the early hours of Tuesday while about 15 to 20 people, including her 7-year-old son, looked on.
- Detectives say an argument began after Davis repeatedly refused the man's sexual advances, she struck him with a grill to fend him off, and he then pulled a knife and stabbed her three times; she was pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital shortly after.
- Authorities believe the attacker had a prior relationship with Davis, which is why he was at the party, and several bystanders tried to stop him before he fled shirtless in gray pants.
- Investigators have obtained a still photograph, interviewed eyewitnesses, identified a vehicle used to flee and are reviewing NYPD body-worn camera footage, but they say they are not yet ready to make an arrest and are urging the public to call Crime Stoppers with tips.
- The killing is the 77th Precinct’s first homicide of the year, and the public nature of the attack — witnessed by neighbors and a child — has raised concerns about community safety and the emotional toll on those who saw the violence.
