Brooklyn Handyman Pleads Guilty to Killing Three Elderly Neighbors

The plea spares a trial by locking in a 30-years-to-life sentence.

Overview

  • Kevin Gavin, 71, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder in Brooklyn in a deal that promises 30 years to life.
  • Prosecutors said he killed three neighbors at the Carter G. Woodson Houses: Myrtle McKinney, 82, in 2015 by stabbing, Jacolia James, 83, in 2019 by stomping, and Juanita Caballero, 78, in 2021 by strangling.
  • Investigators said he gained entry by doing odd jobs in the senior public-housing complex, and the district attorney called him a “serial killer inside his own apartment building.”
  • After Caballero’s January 2021 killing, security video showed Gavin using her debit and benefit cards, and police arrested him a week later, after which he confessed to all three murders.
  • Sentencing is scheduled for May, with outlets reporting either May 20 or May 30, and the murders pushed the housing authority to add 127 security cameras at the complex in early 2022.
