Overview
- Gregory Stewart, 38, was found shot in the head around 9 p.m. on Dec. 7 in a stairwell at NYCHA’s Sotomayor Houses in Soundview and was pronounced dead at Jacobi Medical Center.
- Sean Grant, 28, a resident of the complex, was arrested on Dec. 8 and charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.
- A criminal complaint says officers detained Grant near Rosedale and Westchester avenues about 15 minutes after the shooting and recovered a loaded 9mm pistol from his pants.
- Grant was ordered held without bail in Bronx Criminal Court, and officials say the violence stemmed from a dispute related to an earlier shooting this month as the motive remains under investigation.
- The killing ended a 12-day stretch without a homicide citywide; shootings in the 43rd Precinct are up about 39% this year through Dec. 7 while citywide shootings and homicides have fallen roughly 23% and 21%.
