Bronx Apartment Fire Kills 1-Year-Old, Critically Injures 6-Year-Old Twins

Officials say an open apartment door let flames race up the stairwell.

Overview

  • A blaze on the second floor of 2609 Bainbridge Ave. in Fordham on Monday afternoon left a 1-year-old dead and two 6-year-old twins in critical condition.
  • The child who died was identified as Liam Parks, and all three children were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where the twins remain in critical care.
  • FDNY said 21 units and about 80 firefighters and EMS personnel responded, bringing the six-story building fire under control in about an hour.
  • Fire officials said the apartment door was left open, which drew oxygen and pushed flames up the stairs, and city records list open violations since 2014 for broken self-closing doors in the building.
  • The fire marshal is investigating the cause, at least 10 residents were displaced, and the Red Cross has registered 38 people for emergency help.
