- Federal health agencies reported 22 confirmed Salmonella cases in Washington, Montana, Idaho and Utah with two hospitalizations and no deaths, the CDC said on Sept. 9.
- Traceback work identified Evergreen Fresh Sprouts of Moyie Springs, Idaho as the common grower and Montana lab testing matched an unopened package from a sick person to the outbreak strain by whole genome sequencing.
- Evergreen initiated a voluntary recall on Sept. 4 of 215 cases of broccoli sprouts sold in clear 4 oz bags and clamshells with UPC 8 38796 00105 1 and Use By dates of 9/07/26, 9/09/26, 9/11/26, 9/14/26, and 9/16/26.
- Health officials advise consumers, retailers and restaurants to throw out or return recalled sprouts and to thoroughly clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers that touched them; vulnerable people are urged to avoid raw sprouts.
- Investigators warn the reported count is likely an underestimate because many sick people do not get tested, the FDA’s probe of the contamination source and any additional affected products or jurisdictions is ongoing, and sprouts are repeatedly linked to outbreaks because their warm, wet growing conditions favor bacterial growth.
