Broadway Eases to $33.96M as Star Previews Drive Sharp Weekly Swings

Preview comping and celebrity casting are inflating single-week grosses, creating uncertainty about whether those spikes will convert to sustained box-office recovery.

Overview

  • For the week ending Oct. 18 Broadway’s 30 productions grossed $33,963,816, a decline of about 4% from the prior week while attendance rose roughly 4% to 259,164, according to The Broadway League.
  • High-profile previews and final-star bows produced multiple $1 million-plus weeks: Hamilton led with about $2.78 million, Other Desert Cities grossed roughly $1.82 million, Just in Time returned to $1.04 million during Jeremy Jordan’s final shows, and preview runs for 860 and A Few Good Men each topped $1.2 million.
  • Many of those strong tallies were affected by heavily comped press previews and opening-night comps, which lower reported grosses for weeks that include those performances even when demand and capacity are high.
  • Season-to-date totals through week 21 stand at $662,472,408, about 8% below last year with attendance down roughly 3%, a gap that underlines uneven recovery despite episodic weekly gains.
  • What to watch next: whether full-price sales after official openings for shows now in previews — including 860, A Few Good Men and Wanted — sustain higher grosses into the holiday season and narrow the year-to-date shortfall.
