Broadway Box Office Jumps 27% on Star-Studded Previews and Casting Returns

Celebrity-led revivals and premium-priced previews show how short bursts of demand can sharply lift weekly revenue and test audience appetite before the holidays.

Overview

  • Broadway grosses rose about 27% to roughly $35.29 million for the week ending Oct. 11, with total attendance up about 10% to 248,496, according to The Broadway League.
  • Hamilton led weekly receipts at about $3.09 million, a surge credited in reports to the return of original cast member Christopher Jackson.
  • Other Desert Cities sold out its eight previews and grossed just over $2 million with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Allison Janney, Ed Harris and Joe Keery in the cast.
  • Small-run and star vehicles drove other big gains: Billy Crystal’s 860 earned roughly $1.17–$1.2 million in previews, Bowen Yang’s Oh, Mary! set a Lyceum house record with $1.59 million, and A Few Good Men sold out its first three previews.
  • Despite the one-week spike, season-to-date grosses stand at $628.5 million, down about 8% year-over-year with attendance down about 3%, leaving sustainability dependent on upcoming official openings and extended limited runs.
