Broadway Box Office Falls 10% for Week Ending April 19 as Previews Pack Houses

Heavy preview comping alongside fading spring-break traffic pressured sales.

Overview

  • Broadway’s 40 shows generated $39.08 million and 327,269 tickets for the week ending Sunday, a 10% drop in grosses and a 5% slide in attendance from the prior week.
  • Harry Potter and the Cursed Child led all shows with $2.38 million, followed by Hamilton, The Lion King and Moulin Rouge!.
  • Daniel Radcliffe’s Every Brilliant Thing cracked the top five with $1.57 million, sold out the week, and posted Broadway’s highest average ticket at $198.62.
  • New openings—The Fear of 13 on April 15, Proof on April 16, and Fallen Angels on April 19—landed as nine shows stayed in preview with comped seats that suppressed grosses.
  • Several preview titles showed uneven demand, with Beaches at 61% capacity and $473,027 before its April 22 opening, while season-to-date grosses reached $1.714 billion, about 6% ahead of last year.
