Broadway Box Office Climbs to $43.2 Million as Spring Openings Lift Sales

New previews lifted sales.

Overview

  • Broadway grossed $43.24 million on 334,631 tickets in the week ending Sunday, with capacity at 93.39% and average price at $129.22, up about 12% in revenue and 14% in attendance week over week as the season-to-date rose to $1.63 billion, about 7% ahead of last year.
  • A rush of preview performances expanded supply and helped fill seats, while Aladdin, The Lion King and Wicked added a ninth show to capture demand during the holiday week.
  • Reported grosses were shaped by comped press seats common in previews, as Dog Day Afternoon sold out but posted $1.04 million after four comped press shows and a comped opening night.
  • The top earners were The Lion King ($2.82 million), Harry Potter and the Cursed Child ($2.80 million), Hamilton ($2.59 million), Wicked ($2.12 million) and Aladdin ($1.83 million), with Potter reaching No. 2 on eight performances as others played nine.
  • Casting shifts moved individual titles, as Chess dropped to 65.6% capacity with Lea Michele out for a scheduled absence and Just In Time cooled after Jonathan Groff’s final week, settling at $745,152 across a planned seven-performance week with Matthew Morrison.
