British One-Year-Old Dies After Being Found in Fuerteventura Hotel Pool

The Guardia Civil is investigating the pool incident under the coordination of a local court to determine responsibility.

Overview

  • Emergency services pulled the one-year-old from a pool at an apartment complex in Lajares after an alert on June 15, revived her at the scene and airlifted her to a specialist hospital in Gran Canaria.
  • She spent several days in the paediatric intensive care unit at the Materno Infantil University Hospital before doctors said she had suffered irreversible neurological damage and died.
  • The Guardia Civil opened an inquiry coordinated by a local court and emergency services have recorded a multi-agency response that included advanced and basic life-support ambulances, a medical helicopter, local police and the La Oliva fire department.
  • Published reports say it is not yet clear how the toddler entered the pool and investigators are expected to review the accommodation’s safety measures, pool access controls and supervision to establish responsibility.
  • The case is being reported as the third recent death of a British child in Spain in about a week, a cluster that is likely to increase scrutiny of pool safety at holiday properties and prompt renewed public warnings for parents.
