British Museum Confirms September Opening, Ticket Prices for Bayeux Tapestry in London

The 11th-century embroidery will be shown flat in a custom case to limit strain on its fragile fabric.

Overview

  • The British Museum, which set out its plans on Monday, will display the tapestry from 10 September 2026 to 11 July 2027 in London.
  • Tickets go on sale 1 July with timed 40-minute slots priced £16.50 to £33, and under-16s go free.
  • The piece will be laid out in one continuous, airtight case with tight light controls and digital guides, joined by loans such as the Bodleian’s Junius II manuscript and coins from the Chew Valley Hoard.
  • Organisers say they will use a vibration-damping transport cradle tested on route dry runs, round-the-clock environmental monitoring, and a government insurance arrangement reported at up to £800 million.
  • Opponents warn the move risks harm to a fragile work already logged with 24,204 stains, 9,646 holes and 30 tears, with more than 77,000 petition signatures and David Hockney calling the transport “madness.”
