British Diver Dies Off Gili Air After Solo Shore Entry in Strong Currents

Authorities urged visitors to avoid solo shore dives in the Gili Islands due to fierce currents.

Overview

  • The diver entered the water alone around 11 am Tuesday on Gili Air, then failed to resurface about an hour later.
  • Friends and local dive operators raised the alarm, and multi-agency teams found him at about 1:20 pm at a depth of roughly 12 metres.
  • Paramedics tried CPR on shore at 1:33 pm, then medical staff declared him dead.
  • Police notified the British Embassy, and a post-mortem is planned at Bhayangkara Hospital in Mataram.
  • He was named in family tributes as Robert Ladd, 45, as officials warned that the Indonesian Throughflow drives powerful rip currents that make solo shore entries especially dangerous, noting a similar nearby tourist death reported in March 2025.
