Brighton Signs Canada Striker Promise David on Loan With Obligation to Buy

The season-long deal contains a conditional obligation that could convert into a club-record fee for Union and adds a proven scorer to Brighton’s frontline for the 2026–27 campaign.

Overview

  • Brighton confirmed on Tuesday that it has signed Promise David on a season-long loan from Royale Union Saint-Gilloise that includes an obligation to buy if certain criteria are met.
  • Media reports place the conditional transfer fee at about US$29.7 million and say the obligation would convert at the end of the 2026–27 season when undisclosed performance or appearance conditions are met.
  • David scored 41 goals and had nine assists in 82 appearances for Union, helped the club win the Belgian title in 2025, and contributed at the 2026 World Cup with a goal against Switzerland and an assist against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  • Union described the move as a record sale for the Belgian club, and Brighton said David will join the squad ahead of its Aug. 23, 2026 Premier League match with Everton — giving the club an additional out-and-out striker option.
  • David, a 25-year-old Brampton native who switched his international allegiance from Nigeria to Canada in February 2025, strengthens the growing Canadian presence in top European leagues and could change Brighton’s attacking depth and selection choices this season.
