Brewers Players Launch 'United for Venezuela' Relief Drive in Milwaukee

The campaign will gather emergency supplies locally to be vetted and shipped to humanitarian programs serving quake-hit regions of northern Venezuela.

Overview

  • Brewers catcher William Contreras, outfielder Jackson Chourio and coach Néstor Corredor kicked off the United for Venezuela drive in Milwaukee on June 29 to raise aid for victims of the June 24 earthquakes.
  • Donations are being collected at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Jackson Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday, July 3 with a player meet-and-greet at the kickoff.
  • Organizers, including the nonprofit Forward Latino and local parishes, say they will vet partner programs in Venezuela before forwarding supplies to ensure secure delivery.
  • Requested items focus on immediate needs such as nonperishable food, cases of water, new tents and sleeping bags, work gloves and boots, first-aid and hygiene supplies.
  • The earthquakes created a major humanitarian emergency, with reports of at least 1,400 deaths and thousands injured, and the drive aims to convert local fan support into quickly shipped relief supplies.
