BrewDog Sold in £33m Pre-Pack to Tilray as Administrators Close 38 Bars

Administrators say crowdfunded shareholders will recover nothing after a pre-pack that preserved the Ellon brewery with 11 pubs.

Overview

  • Tilray Brands acquired BrewDog’s global brand, UK brewing operations and 11 pubs for £33m after AlixPartners was appointed administrator.
  • Administrators shut 38 UK bars with immediate effect, resulting in 484 redundancies, while 733 roles transfer to the new owner.
  • Tilray takes control of the Ellon brewery and the Hop Hub in Motherwell, and BrewDog’s 18 franchise bars continue to trade.
  • Equity holders, including roughly 200,000 Equity for Punks backers who invested about £75m, will receive no return from the transaction.
  • Unite criticised the redundancy process as abrupt, citing staff told on short-notice calls, while BrewDog’s German arm will be liquidated and talks continue over US and Australian assets.
