Brazil’s Supreme Court Sets Binding Deadlines to Enforce Amazon Deforestation Curbs

Overview

• The CGU has 180 days to audit Ibama’s environmental sanction processes to identify failures and recommend improvements.
• Ibama and Funai have 90 days to propose technological triage and data-integration solutions and to create a platform for conciliation and negotiation of environmental fines, with Ibama also defining objective criteria for case prescription.
• Funai must, within three months, strengthen its institutional plan by detailing drivers and impacts of deforestation on Indigenous territories and outlining implementation and risk-management strategies.
• The federal government must submit in 90 days a plan to allocate undesignated federal lands with a two‑year timeline and priority for areas at highest risk of deforestation and land grabbing, and respond in 10 days to the CAR–GTA integration proposal to block cattle laundering.
• The STF reaffirmed semiannual monitoring reports, mandated the use of Environmental Funds for institutional strengthening, maintained targets for sharp reduction by 2027 and zero illegal deforestation by 2030, and warned that noncompliance may trigger further measures against the Union.
