The Brazilian Senate voted to ratify the Mercosur-EU trade deal

Overview

  • Brazil's Senate approved the accord unanimously after the lower house, making the bloc's largest economy the third Mercosur member to ratify.
  • Argentina and Uruguay have already ratified the agreement, while Paraguay's parliament still needs to approve it.
  • The European Commission has begun provisional application of the deal pending a legality review by the Court of Justice of the European Union.
  • The treaty removes tariffs on more than 90% of EUMercosur trade, favoring EU exports like cars, wine and cheese and easing entry for South American beef, poultry, sugar, rice, honey and soybeans.
  • Opposition in Europe remains strong, with France seeking safeguards and farmers rolling tractors into Paris, Brussels and Warsaw to protest competitive and standards concerns.
