Brazil’s First Commercial Orbital Launch Fails After Liftoff at Alcântara

A joint investigation is analyzing flight data to identify the anomaly.

Overview

  • The HANBIT-Nano lifted off at 22:13 Brasília time on Dec. 22, and Innospace reported an anomaly roughly 30 seconds into flight.
  • Debris fell within the Alcântara base’s predefined safety zone, with no injuries reported as rescue and FAB teams secured the area.
  • The mission, part of Operação Spaceward, carried eight small payloads for Brazilian and Indian institutions, including five nanosatellites and three experiments.
  • Pre-launch attempts were delayed by technical checks, including cooling and valve issues, as well as weather concerns earlier in the campaign.
  • Innospace’s CEO apologized, said investigators are reviewing telemetry with the FAB, and signaled a new commercial attempt targeted for the first half of 2026.
