Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies Receives Three BYD EVs on One-Year Loan

The no-cost arrangement underscores BYD’s growing presence in government fleets under scrutiny over labor practices.

Overview

  • The Diário Oficial on Jan. 28 formalized a one-year comodato for one armored BYD Tan (2024/2025) and two BYD King GL (2025/2026) sedans, listed at about R$878,000 in total.
  • The Chamber has not stated how the vehicles will be assigned or used during the loan period.
  • The Presidency, the TCU and the STJ also use BYD vehicles, and Lula received a BYD Tan under comodato in 2024 with a reported renewal in 2025, as a deputy filed a proposal to suspend the Presidency’s arrangement.
  • BYD previously suspended a subcontract with Xinjiang after allegations of work analogous to slavery at its Camaçari facility in Bahia.
  • BYD opened a factory in Bahia in November 2025 with state tax incentives through 2032, while federal rules set zero tariff for EV and hybrid kits within a quota through Jan. 31 unless renewed and increase import taxes to 35% by July 2026.
