Brazil’s 2026 Income Tax Season Opens With 4.44 Million Filings and Fraud Warning

The tax agency warns of scams, telling filers to use its official inbox or postal mail.

Overview

  • Receita Federal, which reported Friday, said 4,444,798 returns were submitted in the first week, equal to 10.1% of the 44 million expected, and the filing window runs through May 29.
  • Following Saturday’s alert, the agency stressed it does not send messages by email or apps like WhatsApp and that official notices appear only in the e-CAC Digital Mailbox or arrive by Correios.
  • In-person help in Brasília began Friday through a project with CRC-DF and university tax clinics (NAF), with online scheduling and service at the Receita office in the Setor de Autarquias Sul from 8 a.m. to noon.
  • Early filers mostly used the desktop program (69%), with 19.2% filing online and 11.8% by the Meu Imposto de Renda app, and 59.9% used the pre-filled form that imports data the government already holds.
  • Refunds will be paid in four batches starting May 29, and the tax authority expects about 80% of taxpayers due a refund to be paid by June 30.
