Brazil Sets May 29 Deadline for 2026 Income Tax Filings as Refunds Start the Same Day

A new refund schedule with an automatic cashback targets faster payments.

Overview

  • The filing window opened on March 23 and runs until 11:59 p.m. on May 29, with the government expecting about 44 million returns and roughly 17.9 million already submitted.
  • Who must file includes anyone with taxable income above R$35,584 in 2025, holders of assets over R$800,000 on December 31, and people with betting gains above R$28,467.20 that must be reported.
  • Refunds will be paid in four lots on May 29, June 30, July 31 and August 28, and priority goes to seniors, people with serious illness or disability, and those who use the pre-filled return and choose Pix.
  • A separate automatic ‘cashback’ is planned for July 15 for people who did not file but have small refunds due, with an average of R$125 and a cap of R$1,000.
  • Missing the deadline triggers a minimum fine of R$165.74 and can leave the taxpayer’s CPF irregular, and officials urge use of the pre-filled form, new on-screen alerts, e-CAC tracking and five-year document storage to avoid review holds.
